چکیده

Suppose that Z is a subsystem of both, X and Y . Under some conditions, we can regard the given translation from X to Y as an embedding of Z into Y . What we shall be concerned with in this paper is to give a set of such conditions. The potential reader of this paper might be both philosophy and mathematics–minded. (Its technicality is very mild.) We shall give some simple example. The following theorem is well– known.

Categorical Abstract Algebraic Logic: Equivalence of Closure Systems

In their famous “Memoirs” monograph, Blok and Pigozzi defined algebraizable deductive systems as those whose consequence relation is equivalent to the algebraic consequence relation associated with a quasivariety of universal algebras. In characterizing this property, they showed that it is equivalent with the existence of an isomorphism between the lattices of theories of the two consequence r...

Dual Theories: ‘Same But Different’ or ‘Different But Same’?

I argue that, under the glitz, dual theories are examples of theoretically equivalent descriptions of the same underlying physical content: I distinguish them from cases of genuine underdetermination on the grounds that there is no real incompatibility involved between the descriptions. The incompatibility is at the level of unphysical structure. I argue that dual pairs are in fact very strongl...

Neural encoding of relative position.

Late ventral visual areas generally consist of cells having a significant degree of translation invariance. Such a "bag of features" representation is useful for the recognition of individual objects; however, it seems unable to explain our ability to parse a scene into multiple objects and to understand their spatial relationships. We review several schemes (e.g., global features and serial at...

Empirical Equivalence, Scientific Realism and String Theory

The phenomenon of duality in string theory provides an example of the underdetermination of the theoretical scheme by all possible empirical data. Empirically equivalent theories which arise due to string dualities differ in essential characteristics like the dimension and the topological position of their elementary objects and the form and dimensionality of spacetime. The obvious ontological ...

Ambiguity Propagating Defeasible Logic and the Well-Founded Semantics

The most recent version of defeasible logic (Nute, 1997) is related to the well-founded semantics by translating defeasible theories into normal logic programs using a simple scheme proposed in (Brewka, 2001). It is found that by introducing ambiguity propagation into this logic, the assertions of defeasible theories coincide with the well-founded models of their logic program translations. Wit...
